Growing my Classroom Library

Each year I try to add more books to my classroom library. Thankfully, my new school has given me a certain amount of money to spend on new books. Last weekend I went to Books-A-Million to pick out new books.

I wanted to get a few picture books that related to topics I would teach in Social Studies. I bought these three books.

I searched through the kids fiction for quite some time and ended up getting these titles. Most of these were recommended to me by other teachers on Instagram. They are all new to me so I can't wait to read them myself.

I still have money left to spend on books. What would you recommend?

  1. Oooh, great books you’ve chosen! I LOVED “Out of My Mind,” and “Mockingbird” and “The One and Only Ivan” were excellent as well. One thing they all have in common is that they are Rebecca Caudill award nominees (an Illinois young readers award) – I’d suggest checking out their annual lists of nominees for ideas. They always have excellent books geared towards boys on those lists, which is a huge plus! They also have great selections of multi-cultural literature, awesome resources for getting students to learn about the lives of kids in other countries. You can find more info at www.rebeccacaudill.org, and the 2006-2015 lists are available in the “Past Awards” section.
    Have fun book shopping!

  2. I don't have any book suggestions but I do have a thought for you. Would your school allow you to do scholastic book orders to grow your library? We are allowed four book orders a year and it has really helped me to get many new books for my students! They love when the box arrives on book day because everyone gets to see and use the new books that I've chosen. Just a thought......

  3. Love those choices! I do Tuck Everlasting as a class novel. KIds LOVE it. Rump was a lunchtime book club book and a hit. The author has another one called Jack, about Jack and the Beanstalk. Ivan and Edward Tulane were favorites in my class, too, and Out of My Mind is new to me, too, but after reading it a few weeks ago, will be a class read aloud. Rules by Cynthia Lord is similar, just told from a different point of view. I recommend checking that out. I also just finished The Crossover by Kwame Alexander, and that is fabulous. My first read aloud this year! Also, have you read Fish in a Tree? I recommend checking out blogs like the Nerdy Book Club for great suggestions and Mr. Schu Reads. If you don't have any graphic novels yet, get some of those--Baby Mouse series and Sisters by Raina Telgemeir were must haves in my room. Every student read those books (I teach fourth). I could go on and on...sorry about that!!!
